July 2019 Review Round Up

Another July been and gone. Thankfully it left behind some gold. I was starting to worry about it being a year of good releases not great releases.

The absolute best was Spirit Adrift’s Divided by Darkness. Holy shit, that is a fun album to listen to. Almost completely derailed my month because it’s all I wanted to listen to. It still is to be honest, but I pushed through.

Not much else to say this month. It’s been a month where life has been a little bit in the way of music, but that happens.

Album of the Month
Spirit Adrift – Divided by Darkness
(Heavy Metal – United States of America)
20 Buck Spin – 2019/05/10

This is a rollicking good time. It’s as heavy as some of the greats of modern US doom, but it’s played at a much faster tempo. The vocals are delivered with an intensity usually reserved for the Georgian sludge masters, but they’re clean as a mountain spring. There’s so much to like here. They’ve forged a path to greatness and paved it with talent.

Grind with enough touches of slam and metalcore to trick me into thinking it’s pv. Not complaining though. Each track seems to mimic the ebb and flow of a different violent outburst. It flares and seethes, then goes cold and festers. It covers the full range of anger with a fluency that tells of intimacy with the emotion born of experience.

An Isolated Mind – I’m Losing Myself
(Black Metal – United States of America)
I, Voidhanger – 2019/03/16

When your standard black metal act deals with isolation, it tends to be in the “Behold! The tundra!” sense. An Isolated Mind comes at it from the social sense and, in doing so, have encapsulated musically the bleak despair and burgeoning madness of being persistently alone despite being surrounded by a sea of humanity. Uncomfortable yet rewarding.

Enforcer – Zenith
(Heavy Metal – Sweden)
Nuclear Blast – 2019/04/26

Enforcer have always been a bit on the lurid side: flashy, fast, and ridiculous. So you wouldn’t think them glamming things up a bit would change a whole lot. But it did. And I’m not sure how I feel about it. Zenith comes across as a mash up of Ghost and Motley Crue, and as much as I’m a fan of both, it’s an odd combo. I enjoy it, but it’s definitely distracting.

False – Portent
(Progressive Black Metal – United States of America)
Gilead Media – 2019/07/12

Listening to black metal has exposed me to all sorts of weird stuff, but I first got into it because of the absolute majesty of Emperor. It’s a sensation I don’t often find in the genre anymore. But I found it in False. Portent is heavy on grandeur; it’s three extended tracks allow for many a dramatic swell. I’m completely awestruck.

Friendship – Undercurrent
(Powerviolence – Japan)
Southern Lord – 2019/06/17

Undercurrent sounds sinister. Terrifyingly so. It’s heavy and aggressive, for sure, but it’s strength lies in its tension. It’s like limping away from an arse-kicking, only to get that nagging feeling that your assailants are still there, following. Watching. It’s an album that speaks of malice past, present, and future.

Lice – Woe Betide You
(Blackgaze – Spain/Sweden)
Season of Mist – 2019/05/10

When I heard Teitanblood and Kvarforth (of Shining infamy) were collaborating, I honestly didn’t expect sad and angry Alcest. It’s an odd sort of outcome. Kvarforth is definitely still channelling his tortured self, but the music is tonally weird. Not necessarily bad; it seems designed to never let the listener find comfort. Maliciously arcane.

Nucleus – Entity
(Death Metal – United States of America)
Unspeakable Axe – 2019/06/14

A for concept; C, C+ for execution. Old school death with a peppermill twist of tech is a pretty solid idea for keeping the sound fresh. But I can’t shake the feeling this is sonic porridge. I’m sure some people will take enjoyment, nourishment, and comfort from it; but for me it’s just a little bit stodgy and dull. Not bad, but hard to recommend.

Rammstein –
(Neue Deutsche Härte – Germany)
Universal – 2019/05/17

What to make of Rammstein’s technically untitled seventh album? Is it worth the decade of waiting? Is it a suitable swansong should, as I suspect, they break up completely and finally? To answer: it’s great, mostly, and yes. More electronic leaning than I expected, it keens closest to Herzeleid but with a defter touch. A circle well closed.

Redbait – Cages
(Hardcore – United States of America)
New Age Records – 2019/06/14

While I am very appreciative of the uptick in proudly left hardcore, there is still an interplay between message and delivery that needs to be balanced. Redbait have a cogent and poignant message, but bury it beneath a delivery so furious that much of it gets lost. I don’t expect the band to play nice; it would just be nice the anger sounded more directed.

June 2018 Review Round Up

Halfway through the year already. Hasn’t time flown past?

June was another month that fell into the surprisingly busy category. I went in expecting, for several reasons, to only have maybe five reviews. More than doubled that. Pretty happy about that to be honest.

Album of the month belongs justly to the unstoppable thrash machine that is Death Angel. A startlingly consistent band to begin with, it wasn’t a huge surprise that they put out more gold. But that it was this gleaming? Didn’t truly call that.

Lots of other good stuff too, plus the return of the transcendently bad review. Always fun.

Album of the Month
Death Angel – Humanicide
(Thrash – United States of America)
Nuclear Blast – 2019/05/31

You want Bay Area thrash these days? You want Death Angel. Humanicide is one of their strongest showings in their long career. It’s blisteringly fast. It’s unabashedly rabble rousing. And it’s easily the most memorable of their albums. They have penned an album of thrash anthems that will absolutely stay fresh and loud in your mind.

Don’t let the fact this is grindcore (and a particularly incendiary version of the genre at that) fool you; the primary emotion on display here isn’t anger. It’s despair. They have expressed a worldview so bleak and futile that it’s impossible to not be affected by it. As it cuts to the core of human failure, you will feel the incisions.

Baroness – Gold & Grey
(Progressive Sludge – United States of America)
Abraxan Hymns – 2019/06/14

Is it just me, or is there something wrong with the levelling on this otherwise fine album? It was a complaint levelled at Purple too, but it seems so much worse this time around. It’s an hour of soulful, engaging music, but without serious tweaks to your equaliser, it’s a tough listen. Great if you have the patience. Not so much if not.

Brain Bleed – Automated Eradication
(Slamgrind – United States of America)
Self-released – 2019/06/07

It’s a controversial opinion in my social circle, but I love grind with breakdowns and, in Brain Bleed’s case, slams. There’s something about the primal call to headbang that the slowdowns generate that blends perfectly with the manic fury of blasting grindcore. This burst gets right into the lizard brain and stirs shit up.

Imprecation – Damnatio Ad Bestias
(Death Metal – United States of America)
Dark Descent – 2019/03/22

Imprecation unleash their death metal like an even more feral early Roadrunner-era Deicide; their sound isn’t so much brutal, as it is pure evil. There’s nothing esoteric here; assault and battery take the place of ritual, as ultimately the blood that flows is all the same and always welcomed by those who lurk in the shadows of this reality.

Kūka’ilimoku – Kūka’ilimoku
(Raw Black Metal – Hawaii)
Self-released – 2019/05/29

As far as raw black metal goes, this is raw. But, and I hesitate to mention it given the band’s existence is a hostile reaction to Anglo-American oppression of Hawaiian Polynesian culture, there’s an almost surf rock vibe to it. This does so much to separate the band from the standard death by frostbite sound that raw black metal usually peddles.

Misþyrming – Algleymi
(Black Metal – Iceland)
Norma Evangelium Diaboli – 2019/05/24

For a genre that strongly purports the “You are your own God” worldview, black metal can be very restrictive. Pick a lane and stick to it tends to be the creative ethos. Algleymi bucks this trend by seamlessly incorporating various black metal styles into the one album. It’s melodic. It’s post. It’s punk. It’s avant. It’s brilliant.

Possessed – Revelations of Oblivion
(Death Thrash – United States of America)
Nuclear Blast – 2019/05/10

With a layover between albums of over 30 years, a bit of concern about performance rust is valid. But let me assure you, Possessed are every bit as vital in 2019 as they were in the 80s. Revelations hits like a heavyweight but moves like a cruiserweight. Their classic amalgamation of thrash and death metal fully retains its brilliance.

Skáphe + Wormlust – Kosmískur Hryllingur
(Black Metal – United States of America + Iceland)
Mystískaos – 2019/06/06

I don’t cover a lot of collaborations, but Skáphe and Wormlust teaming up is worth the print. As far as avant-garde black metal goes, this isn’t so much mind-bending but mind-breaking. They’ve combined their already considerable abilities to headfuck a listener and unleashed a swirling, claustrophobic nightmare.

Sunn O))) – Life Metal
(Drone – United States of America)
Southern Lord – 2019/04/26

Life Metal makes it sound like this album is an affirmation of positivity. Nope. It’s more because the dead can’t feel the tension and anxiety these drones inspire. It’s Sunn O)))’s best work this decade for exactly that reason. The noise permeates the body and the brain, and then starts to mess with them. You don’t listen to this; you experience it.

Throat Ditch – Throat Ditch
(Fastcore – United States of America)
Self-released – 2019/06/15

Throat Ditch’s take on fastcore is hardcore that’s all fight and no think. Even with the lulls, samples, and other assorted quiet moments, this is an ep that puts aggression front, centre, and lit up with spotlights. And it’s all the better for it. It has a singularity of purpose that brokers no compromise to its overall vision.

Ulcerated Offal – Wipe Out
(Goregrind – Russia)
Self-released – 2019/05/13

I hate this so much I have trouble fathoming it. The production is muddier than anything I have ever heard. The “songs” are virtually indistinguishable. It hurts to listen to. But all of these are deliberate and considered stylistic choices. It’s a hard push into noise. It’s virtually unlistenable and I hate it so much, I begrudgingly respect it.

May 2019 Review Round Up

I hope everyone had a good May. Looking back, I think I’ve had a slightly more productive month than I expected. Not the worst thing.

We’re edging ever closer to the end of the decade and I’m getting itchy with anticipation. Looking forward to my Top 100 coming out, even though it’s months off still. Hard choices are having to be made.

Speaking of hard choices, May’s album of the month was a tough one. Mesarthim won out in the end. It’s captivating, different, and brilliant.

Mesarthim – Ghost Condensate

Mesarthim are fast becoming one of my favourite black metal acts. And it’s primarily because they keep evolving towards something that shouldn’t be. The incorporation of trance into their cosmic black metal is seemless. More to the point, it remains distinctly black metal. Nothing is sacrificed to their sound and their talent expands like the galaxy.

With equal parts heavy metal, speed metal, and thrash, Daredevil are a band heavy of exuberance. Heavy on talent too. The three tracks on this demo whip by in a flurry of good times that sets its own standard. This isn’t a cheap nostalgia hit; Youth in Revolt pushes itself to be a distinct, powerful voice amongst metals oldest genres.

Deathspell Omega – The Furnaces of Palingenesia
(Avant-garde Black Metal – France)
Norma Evangelium Diaboli – 2019/05/24

It’s been a while since Deathspell has got to me like this, but Furnaces went straight to that inky dark spot on the soul where selfish desire meets feral instinct and stirred it all up. Subversive yet bombastic, it warps what you understand black metal to be then delivers it back to you with a leering disdain for your existence.

Electric B.C. – Demo 2019
(Stoner Sludge – Finland)
Self-released – 2019/05/08

I can forgive a small amount of stylistic inconsistency when the end product is still a satisfying racket. It starts out metal, but has shifted to sludge’s rock fringes by the close. But every riff is caked in bong resin; thick and heavy is name of the game. I also love that they haven’t sacrificed pace for tar. It moves as it fumes.

Horsehunter – Horsehunter
(Doom Metal – Australia)
Magnetic Eye – 2019/03/02

Is there a petition going for Horsehunter to reunite? Could we start one? This is some of the most invigorating doom in recent memory. The riff is king, but it’s also distorted in a way that asserts its dominance over the listener. Combine that with a furiously spat vocal delivery and you have an album as heavy on anger as it is talent.

Laster – Het Wassen Oog
(Progressive Black Metal – Netherlands)
Prophecy – 2019/04/05

Laster have found themselves a satisfying vein of metal to mine here. Het Wassen Oog is progressive in an initially similar way to recent Enslaved, but then goes in unexpected directions. There’s a touch of Vaudeville or a ’30s radio drama, as something sinister looms large, present, yet unknowable. It’s ethereal and heavy like a shadow given form.

Latitudes – Part Island
(Post-metal – England)
Debemur Morti – 2019/04/05

Sophisticated album construction doesn’t get enough praise. Part Island requires patience to get into and unravel. That’s not to say it’s dull. It’s not. But the true splendour of the composition builds itself deliberately and doesn’t let its secrets go cheaply. You know a pay-off is coming, but you have to give yourself over to the journey first.

Leather Glove – Perpetual Animation
(Sludgy Death Metal – United States of America)
Sentient Ruin Laboratories – 2019/03/08

I find how likely I am to revisit an album is one of my truest indicators of how good it truly is. And for all the good on display on Perpetual Animation, it falls down on that front. I’ve listened to it, I’ve taken in its well-composed savagery, I’ve nodded along to its carnivorous rhythms, and I’m going to inevitably forget its existence.

夢遊病者 – Ѫ
(Avantgarde Black Metal – Japan)
Sentient Ruin Laboratories – 2019/04/26

Discordant and dissonant, 夢遊病者 have produced an ep that is overwhelming in its auditory assault. It’s a serenade and a lullaby and howl of rage and scream of madness all at once. Schizophrenic in its delivery of a spectrum of emotions, the end result are two tracks of harrowing, terrifying, captivating grandeur.

Savage – No Escape
(Powerviolence – United States of America)
SPHC Records – 2019/02/19

I like my pv when it’s either weird or shouty. Savage is definitely shouty. And by shouty I mean it reminds me of classic hardcore, but with a greater sense of urgency. No Escape gets straight up in your face and stays there, blasting you with spit as it makes its point as clear and venomous as a box jellyfish. Puts the power and the violence into pv.

Solitarian – Contemplations… Where None Dwell
(Black Metal – Canada)
Self-released – 2019/05/01

In the realm of the black metal demo, any band who at least gets the basics right is worth more than outright scorn. Solitarian do black metal exactly as you’ve heard it before; they haven’t found their unique voice yet, so it quickly becomes an exercise in generic tropes. But they don’t fuck it up. Faint praise, but I’ve heard much worse than them.

Split Open – Demo 2019
(Powerviolence – Canada)
Self-released – 2019/05/06

If you asked me when I started listening to pv all those years ago what the defining characteristics of the genre are, I would have said bookending every track with feedback. It’s a more complex genre than that, but Split Open took me back. But I can’t really fault their approach though. Simplicity is a virtue when it’s done this well.

Waldgeflüster – Mondscheinsonaten
(Blackened Folk Metal – Germany)
Nordvis – 2019/04/12

As far as folk driven black metal goes, Mondscheinsonaten is folkier than most. It’s like someone murdered Korpiklaani or Turisas¹ and their shades have returned to tell their tale to those who would listen. Sadder and slower than true folk metal, Waldgeflüster is evocative of a world of shadow, dimly lit by the souls of the living.

¹ I’m aware that Waldgeflüster is German, while Korpiklaani and Turisas are both Finnish.

April 2019 Review Round Up

So, that was April. I enjoyed it.

GORE WARNING: PISSGRAVE COVER AHEAD

I might not have bothered with the gore warning, but for the fact that Pissgrave put out my album of the month. They’re a band that take death metal and seek out what ugly depths lie within. Confrontational and violent, Posthumous Humiliation is about as hideous as death metal can get.

April also allowed me to bookend my month with amazing tours. I started the month with Emperor. They were everything I wanted them to be. Their name makes sense, because when they play live, they are nothing short of imperial. I would see them again in a heartbeat.

I ended the month with At the Gates and The Haunted. Technically, they were also on tour with Witchery, but the entirety of Witchery ditched the meet and greet, which is a dick move, so fuck them. That grumble aside, the rest of the night was incredible. The Haunted and At the Gates have very different stage presences, but are both possessed of a captivating energy that holds you from start to finish.

The inexorable march of time will bring us to the May reviews soon enough, so I hope you enjoy my thoughts on April.

Album of the Month
Pissgrave – Posthumous Humiliation
(Death Metal – United States of America)
Profound Lore – 2019/03/04

The level of violence, both overt and implied, in this album is nuts. The vocals are akin to someone drowning in acid, the guitars are like a frenzied ice-pick attack, the drums might as well be hammers swung at your joints, and the solos are like the gears of a horrifying trap grinding into action. Holy crap, they do depravity incredibly well.

Do you like songs about terrible relationships, the toxic culture in which they thrive, and the depression that results from it all? Hope so, because that’s what Gold have delivered. It’s a hypnotic, dreamy sort of album, but there’s no getting around how bleak it is. It’s a siren song; it will draw you in, but you’ll dash on its emotional rocks.

Lurid Panacea – The Insidious Poisons
(Grindcore – Australia)
Self-released – 2019/04/14

Lurid Panacea have delivered on one of grind’s greatest and rarest experiences: the hallucinatory mindfuck. The forty seven tracks are a whirlwind of disorientating chaos; there is no respite, there is no hiding, there is no relief. It gets into your head and assaults your synapses until nothing makes sense anymore. Holy hell, I love it.

Misery Index – Rituals of Power
(Death Metal – United States of America)
Season of Mist – 2019/03/08

I’ve been waiting all decade for this: the album Misery Index gets completely right. They’re no longer truly deathgrind in sound, having fully transitioned to a true death metal production, but the grind lives on in them in spirit. This is furious stuff; it’s heartening to hear them consistently and loudly pissed off. Relentlessly agitated.

MoreGore – Додикав Напиздовуют Грачи
(Grindcore – Ukraine)
Self-Released – 2019/01/30

Straightforward and authentic almost to a fault, MoreGore deliver their grindcore without much in the way of unnecessary artifice. A couple of samples are thrown in, but it’s mostly guitar, bass, drums, and shouts. No fancy production tricks; just meat and potatoes grind. Definitely for the genre purists, but solid nonetheless.

Sněť – Promo
(Death Metal – Czech Republic)
Self-Released – 2019/04/08

If you want to know how to use a demo to impress, listen to Sněť’s promo. Only two tracks, six minutes and nine seconds in total, but it wrings every last drop of entertainment out of that brief run time. You like instrumental death metal? Intoxikace will scratch that itch. And Obří Kat does guttural so well, you’ll forget you’re listening to a demo.

Týr – Hel
(Progressive Folk Metal – Faroe Islands)
Metal Blade – 2018/03/08

Finally getting around to Týr. I expected folk metal, but what I really got was melodic death metal that reminded me of when the Gothenburg sound was something to brag about. It’s still upbeat like I would expect from folk metal. It’s thematically on point too. But it’s driven by an energetic, melodeth sound that just begs to be heard.

Venom Prison – Samsara
(Deathcore – Wales)
Prosthetic – 2019/03/15

Deathcore would be much less of a joke if the bands involved could integrate the death metal and the hardcore as well as Venom Prison do. This is full speed, almost uncontrollable in its approach. The furious lyrical polemic is a perfect fit for this onslaught. It’s challenging; not going to lie, but it’s worth it. It’s a workout for your brain.

March 2019 Review Round Up

It been demo month here at Metalshopped. With the exception of Overkill’s latest, which was a gift from Mrs Metalshopped, everything up for review is a demo. And I loved it. It’s a little bit more hit and miss, but I was got into some great bands right on the ground floor of what I hope are fruitful careers. I will most likely do another demo month later in the year too.

The band I was most into this month and, therefore, the album of the month is Suffering. I haven’t enjoyed an instrumental release this much in ages. It does have some vocals, to be honest, but they’re so few and far between that what you are really experiencing is band relying on their ability to play. And those Russians can play.

In live music news, I’m pumped up for April. I get to see Emperor and At the Gates. Good times ahead.

Album of the Month
Suffering – Devouring Hatred
(Death Metal – Russia)

This demo is all about demonstrating how good this band could be with a bit of production support. They aim to be blackened, technical, and progressive; and they swing for the fences to achieve it. Largely eschewing vocals was a sensible idea, because it’s obvious their great strength lies in their score. Super talented stuff.

Do me two favours and I will love you forever. The first, ditch the abrupt song endings. The second, never release an album with such a shitty intro again. Once it gets going, this has a malevolently sensual feel to it. Reminds me of Satyricon in a positive way. The flaws are jarring, but they can do this black metal business really well.

Ås – Fortgestank
(Black Metal – Germany)
Self-Released – 2019/02/22

The intensity they manage to introduce into these three songs is seriously impressive. The industrial guitar tone sounds like your brain is full of iron filings and is having electricity blasted through it. And the shrieking vocals are abrasive in a headache inducing way. It approaches black metal in a way that wants to push boundaries.

Deathgod – Demo 2019
(Death Metal – Mexico)
Self-Released – 2019/01/03

I love the “We don’t give a fuck” attitude that permeates through this. It doesn’t wait and leaves nothing behind. Three tracks of pulverising death metal that hits all the high notes while not taking any time out to pad. It’s so taut, you’d think it would snap like an elastic band, but it doesn’t. I have trouble believing this is just a demo.

Internal Purgatory – Demonstration of Apathetic Dissociation
(Atmospheric Black Metal – Australia)
Self-Released – 2019/01/10

Moody intro; a track of fuzzy, dissonant lo-fi; another, longer, track of fuzzy, dissonant lo-fi; a cover track that also leans heavily into fuzzy dissonance; and a moody outro. I enjoyed the experience, but there’s no doubt it’s a one-trick pony. It helps that the one trick is more of a sick kickflip than a worn out ollie.

Orbis Daemonium – Opus Contra Naturam
(Doom Metal – Brazil)
OEO – 2019/03/03

I know the band say they’re black metal, but this demo seemingly dives seamlessly into traditional doom with properly growled vocals. It might be on the heavy end of trad, but it’s performed in a clean, precise way. This is the key to Orbis’ success; this may be a demo, but they’ve made every effort to keep the production as crisp as possible.

Overkill – The Wings of War
(Thrash – United States of America)
Nuclear Blast – 2019/02/22

Old school, good times thrash. Not going to lie, I’ve always found Blitz’s vocals a little tough, but they clicked for me on Wings of War. Good and harsh, they compliment the punkish, bratty thrash perfectly. The whole album rattles with serious groove, but isn’t groove metal. It goes to show that melody done right will always be king.

Scourge Lair – One Hundred Eyes One Hundred Hands
(Blackened Death Metal – Finland)
Self-Released – 2019/03/08

I will always enjoy a band that sound like good Marduk and I’ll sing their praises even louder if they put in the effort to be more than a tired knock off. Congratulations, Scourge Lair, you impressed me. It’s a bit of a slow starter, but you really nailed that clandestine murk meets blitzkrieg dichotomy. I love the sinister fury.

Skullord – In Death
(Doom Metal – Brazil)
Self-Released – 2019/01/01

Come on guys. You play traditional doom. True doom. Not drone. Monotony is not your friend. You live in a realm where the riff should be king, but here the riff is a viscount. It’s power here is far from absolute. That’s a big problem, as there are some good moments on display, but the overall tone is perfunctory at best.

Vomit Spell – Demo 2019
(Deathgrind – Germany)
Lower Class Kids Records – 2019/01/02

Deathgrind loses nothing when performed as raw as this. It takes all the immediacy of grind and marries it to the visceral nature of death metal, while the rough and ready nature of the demo keeps it feral. You might say dangerous. February 2019 Review Round Up

And so that was February. It was a thought provoking month for me too.

Starting off with the album of the month. Lots of competition for it this time round. I settled on Yerûšelem’s album, The Sublime. It’s put together by some of the madmen/geniuses in Blut Aus Nord, but it’s a substantially different beast. Trust me. It’s definitely of them, but not like them.

You will also read a review of another album that I can assure you is positive, despite my revulsion. You’ll know it when you read it. It’s the challenge of reviewing something critically significant, but abhorrent.

And then there’s Dream Theater. Certainly not album of the month, but it’s a mighty improvement. What I don’t understand from my perusal of reviews, is why people expect something out of the box from them? They’ve been around forever and firmly established their sound. It’s not necessarily formulaic to play to their strengths; they just want an album that sounds good. I think we learned a lesson about unnecessarily tampering with things last time, so I’m pretty glad they went back to the old well to drink the familiar water.

As I said, it’s been a thought-provoking month. It’s kept me busy.

Yerûšelem – The Sublime
(Industrial Post Punk – France)

This is sublime. There. I said it. The problem is that the lazy wordplay is also the most accurate way to describe The Sublime. It’s like Swans and Killing Joke doing a joint set in a Buddhist temple that was still under construction. The combination of crushing industrial rhythms with meditative melodies and chanting vocals is utterly mesmerising.

In a world full of posturing, antagonistic, “outsider” black metal, it’s nice to come across something that sounds like resistance. Blue Hummingbird perform furiously in the name of Huitzilopochtli, the primary god of war and human sacrifice in the Aztec pantheon. Their pride in their heritage is as clear cut as their overt, naked hostility.

Candlemass – The Door to Doom
(Epic Doom Metal – Sweden)

Candlemass is one of the great gateway bands to doom metal and The Door to Doom shows why. They hit that magical combination of sweeping grandeur and thrumming reverberation. The melodies announce their presence with vigour then linger in the low end long enough to rattle the bones. That album title is awfully apt in retrospect.

They say they’re blackened death; I reckon they’re far too monolithic to be anything but death doom. Genre semantics aside, you should probably listen to these guys. When I said they were monolithic, I mean it. They sound like a graveyard made animate, dripping soil; long dead bones; and recently dead viscera. It’s ominous and putrescent.

Dream Theater – Distance Over Time

I hated The Astonishing so much I burnt it in a pit of fire; suffice to say, expectations were low here. Maybe they were chastened by the negative reaction, because this is stripped back, basic DT. Good God, it’s a change for the better. It’s actually fun to listen to. There’s nothing superfluous here, just rock-solid entertainment. I’m astonished.

Gets Worse – Snubbed

This is powerviolence, so no surprises that it comes on like an assault. It’s good and shouty too; nice to listen to a pv act that sounds old school punk without being a drag. And as spasmodic as their time signatures may be (and believe me, they get pretty epileptic), the whole album is cohesive. A stream of consciousness put to blastbeats.

I know what they were attempting. I know they succeeded. But it’s way outside my comfort levels. It’s the fetishisation of suffering. It’s a perverse, transgressive ritual that starts with erotic vivisection and culminates in a noisome, necrophillic hatefuck. It’s definitely not my sonic kink, but if it’s yours listen to it, watch some Salo, and leave me alone.

Ostro – Ostro
(Doom Metal – Australia)

If you’re going to strive to put some epic into your doom, your singer needs some serious chops and the guitars need to pack a wallop. Ostro is almost there. So close. But that proximity to epicness serves to highlight the failure to attain it. They aimed for Candlemass, but had to settle for flashlight tag. I’ll buy their next release though. They could nail it.

Rotting Christ – The Heretics
(Melodic Black Metal – Greece)
Season of Mist – 2019/02/15

BAM! That’s how you return to form. Rituals was a bit naval gazing for my taste, but The Heretics is right on point. Its sharp thematic focus allows the melodies to soar majestically while buffeting mercilessly, much like being caught in the path of a legendary roc. Conventional theology takes a beating here, but they’re points that need hearing.

Thetan – Abysmal
(Powerviolence – United States of America)
Self-Released – 2019/02/01

Thetan strip their punk right back to drum, bass, and vocals. That means they’ve got less to work with, so what they do have has to go much further. But there’s only so far they can stretch their stock. So they land some killers, but there’s also quite a bit of filler. And by filler, I mean stretches of tracks that sort of mush together. Stick around for the good stuff though.

Vanum – Ageless Fire
(Black Metal – United States of America)
Profound Lore – 2019/02/15

Ageless Fire was the perfect album for a terrible day. It’s an album that speaks to the transcendental power of furious rage. To achieve this, Vanum take a longer form approach. Rather than simply blasting away, they take the meditative focus that pure anger can afford you, and turn it into a blistering, ash-raining firestorm.

And so we come to the end of another year. Lots of talent on display. More than a few surprises along the way too. By and large, I’ve had a cracking year listening to metal.

Last year, I had a laundry list of albums I missed that I wish I hadn’t. This year, I managed to get most of my targets reviewed. That being said, here’s my list of missed opportunities:

11) Mantar – The Modern Art of Setting Ablaze

Nuclear Blast – 2018/08/24

What I Said Then: Their incendiary songs roll along with a pyroclastic flow that ensures that everything in their path is obliterated.
What I Say Now: I just love how effortlessly catchy these songs are. For something as straight up mean as this, the fact that you can sing (yell) along with it pretty well immediately is a hell of an achievement.

10) Corpsessed – Impetus of Death

What I Said Then: It’s like the coroner performing an autopsy, but in your back shed with garden tools.
What I Say Now: Corpsessed understand the compelling perversion of horror. That, once the monster is loose, it is impossible to look away from the bloodshed. Behold the captivation of the train wreck.

Kurushimi – What is Chaos?
(Avant-garde Jazz – Australia)
Art as Catharsis – 2018/09/13

Kurushimi goes everywhere at once, but then the track changes and it finds a whole new set of directions to go all at once. It’s overwhelming, but a great album is contained in the cognitive ultramarathon.

9) Barren Altar – Entrenched in the Faults of the Earth

Self-Released – 2018/06/12

What I Said Then: This album is venomous, filthy and aggressive, but is delivered with such diligence and vigour that nothing gets lost in the malign fury.
What I Say Now: This album has some incredibly deft touches. Doom, especially of the funereal type, doesn’t typically lend itself to musical agility. But Barren Altar nail some pretty spectacular audio gymnastics.

8) Michael Romeo – War of the Worlds / Pt. 1

Music Theories Recordings – 2018/07/27

What I Said Then: It still has all the technical merit you’d expect from one of metal’s great guitarists and composers, but it comes without any of self-indulgent baggage of solo projects.
What I Say Now: I am going to say this is the most straight up fun album on this list. The lyrics, the solos, the weird directions it goes; all of it is done for maximum enjoyment. Entertainment turned up to eleven.

7) Deicide – Overtures of Blasphemy

What I Said Then: This is laser beam focussed and whip cord taut. Fuck it; it’s their best album ever.
What I Say Now: I’ve gone back and listened to the best of back catalogue. I stand by the above claim. It is heavy, malevolent, blasphemous Deicide at their absolute best. Thoroughly demonic.

I keep coming back to this. There’s something both evocative and visceral about this piece. It has a sinister, almost blood-soaked violence to it, which is impressive since it’s a drawing of a scribe.

6) Moss Upon the Skull – In Vengeful Reverence

I, Voidhanger – 2018/10/19

What I Said Then: Taking Orchid-era Opeth’s proto-sensitivity, combining it with Cascadian black metal’s hermit tendencies, then wrapping it in trad death metal hostility is ambitious.
What I Say Now: This is a very different beast to your standard prog death. It breathes, it grows, it sounds like a living organism made of rage. I love this organic approach to music making.

5) Nadja – Sonnborner

What I Said Then: Open your ears and marvel; Nadja have produced a masterpiece of dreamy, inspired doom.
What I Say Now: It’s like an anxiety attack slowed down. I can’t think of any other album I’ve listened to that takes something so relaxing and made it seem so tense. Soothing like a persistent catatonic state.

4) Skeletal Remains – Devouring Mortality

Dark Descent – 2018/04/13

What I Said Then: It makes me feel like I’m windmilling with luxurious waist length hair, even if I’m just gently headbanging while driving.
What I Say Now: Nothing is quite as invigorating as Being hit by tropical cyclone Devouring Mortality. It’s a maelstrom of chaotic riffs and pounding drums. It smashes like a storm that doesn’t stop.

The Dillinger Escape Plan Memorial Award for Most Kick Ass Live Act
Sólstafir

I wish I had some pics or a video like I did last year, but Sólstafir were just so hypnotic, intense, and awe-inspiring that the thought of whipping out my phone never occured to me. I could have cried.

3) Bliss Signal – Bliss Signal

Profound Lore – 2018/09/28

What I Said Then: It’s nice to see James Kelly return to the more abrasive, blackened sounds, but combining it with grime creates a sublime, haunting sound I didn’t think could exist.
What I Say Now: Bliss Signal upends the black metal status quo. This is functionally a techno album, but lives and breathes the left hand path. Trailblazing, unique and utterly compelling.

2) Daughters – You Won’t Get What You Want

Ipecac – 2018/10/26

What I Said Then: With guitars that sound like a musical air raid siren, drumming that consistently surprises in the best way, and one of the most evocative vocal deliveries I’ve heard they have delivered one of the most welcoming forays into discomfort ever.
What I Say Now: By moving noise rock closer to noise than is typical for the genre, Daughters have tapped into a mighty wellspring of disquiet. It still rocks, but in a tremendously unsettling way.

1) Ihsahn – Àmr

What I Said Then: It’s technically superb, emotionally vivid, and memorable in a way that defies expectation
What I Say Now: It’s about as close to a perfect album as possible from Ihsahn. At its core is a marvellously complicated heart. Hearth warm and deathly cold, locked in precarious balance.

So there we are. That’s as firm a one, two, and three as you can get. I’m still pretty blown away by Ámr to be honest.

And forward to 2019 and the end of an amazing decade in heaviness.
